Public meeting scheduled on Lander, WY flood risk management study

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in cooperation with the city of Lander, will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with a brief presentation at 5:15 p.m.at the City Hall, 240 Lincoln Street in Lander, WY. The purpose of the meeting is to gather input on the recently initiated Popo Agie River flood risk management feasibility study.

Comments sought on Draft Environmental Assessment for PL 84-99 Levee Certification, Greybull, Wyoming

A draft Environmental Assessment has been prepared by Amec Foster Wheeler, Environmental & Infrastructure, Inc. for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to determine if any environmental impacts would be caused by a proposed project to bring the town of Greybull Levee System into compliance with 44 CFR § 65.10 of the National Flood Insurance Program criteria for levee certification. The Greybull Levee System includes two project areas, the Dry Creek right bank levee and the Big Horn River left bank levee. Comments on the draft EA must be postmarked or received no later than August 8, 2016.

Public input sought on proposed list for expediting routine alterations at District civil works projects

Several draft programmatic environmental assessments for developing categorical permissions under Title 33, U.S. Code 408 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 are currently available for public review. Each draft programmatic EA evaluates the environmental impacts of allowing certain routine alterations to be permitted at federally-constructed civil works projects within the Omaha District’s civil works boundary (Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa). Comments must be postmarked or received no later than August 1, 2016.

Lake Zorinsky suspect for larval zebra mussels

A recent water sample taken from Lake Zorinsky has tested positive for veligers, the microscopic larval form of zebra mussels. Additional water samples continue to be analyzed and shoreline surveys are being conducted. There are no current indications that the zebra mussels are a threat to the dam’s infrastructure. At this time, there are no plans to lower Lake Zorinsky or use any chemicals to treat the lake for zebra mussels.

Final Phase: Implementation of Garrison Land Transfer meetings June 22 and 23

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) will host two public meetings in June to share and discuss the May 6, 2015 Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Secretaries of the Department of the Army (Army) and Department of the Interior (Interior). The MOA sets forth the process for transferring administrative jurisdiction over certain Garrison Project lands no longer needed for the construction, maintenance and operation of the project to be held in trust for the Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation).

Additional public meeting scheduled for Lower Yellowstone Intake Diversion Dam Fish Passage Project in MT

A third public meeting has been scheduled to solicit comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Lower Yellowstone Intake Diversion Dam Fish Passage Project. The draft EIS analyzes potential effects associated with the proposed action to improve fish passage for pallid sturgeon and other native fish at the Intake Diversion Dam, continue the viable and effective operation of the Lower Yellowstone Project, and contribute to ecosystem restoration. Comments on the draft EIS must be postmarked or received by July 18, 2016.

New Operations Project Manager at Fort Peck

Darin McMurry has been selected as the new Operations Project Manager (OPM) for the Fort Peck Dam Project in Fort Peck, Montana. McMurry will replace John Daggett who retires June 3. Fort Peck Dam, located on the Missouri River in Montana, is the upper most dam of the six main stem dams the Corps operates. Responsibilities for the OPM include Emergency Operations within the project boundary, which takes in most of Montana and northern Wyoming; contracting work assigned to the office; environmental compliance; inter-agency coordination and public relations within the project area.

Tree planting ceremony to mark end of ecosystem restoration project construction along Lower Boulder Creek in Boulder County, CO

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, in partnership with the Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department, will hold a tree planting ceremony on Friday, April 22, at 8:30 a.m. MDT, to celebrate the end of construction of a stream ecosystem restoration project along an approximately one-mile stretch of Lower Boulder Creek on the county’s Alexander Dawson Open Space property.

USACE asked to finalize jurisdictional land transfer of some Garrison Project Lands to the Department of Interior

The Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works (ASA/CW) has directed funding be made available as part of the Fiscal Year 2016 budget to implement a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for transferring jurisdiction of some Garrison project lands no longer needed for construction, maintenance and operation, to the Department of the Interior to be held in trust for the Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation).

Online reservations now offered for USACE Lake Sakakawea campsites

Visitors to Wolf Creek or East Totten Trail campgrounds can now make reservations by going online or calling a toll free number starting on March 30 at 9 am. Reservations for all sites must be made through Reserve America by going online to Recreation.gov or by calling the toll free reservation line at 1-877-444-6777. Same day reservations will be available by calling the toll free number. Cash and checks will no longer be directly accepted at East Totten Trail or Wolf Creek Campgrounds. The recreation season will run from May 15 to September 15 and check out time will be at noon each day.
