  • Tyrannosaurus Rex to embark on cross country journey

    The USACE Omaha District’s Wankel T.rex will soon travel from Montana, where it has resided for the past 66 million years, to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. The Museum of the Rockies, Bozeman, Mont., home to the T.rex since it was excavated in 1990, will host a free, public sendoff April 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History is planning a number of events, beginning April 15, to welcome the T. rex to the Nation’s Capital.   • Public comment sought on Intake diversion dam modification, lower Yellowstone project at Intake, Mont.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along with the Bureau of Reclamation, co-lead agencies on the Intake Diversion Dam modification project, are seeking public comments on a draft supplement to an environmental assessment that was released in 2010. The supplement identifies alternatives to modify the existing diversion dam located in Intake, Mont. to improve passage for endangered pallid sturgeon and other native fish in the lower Yellowstone River.

  • Corps to begin levee construction project along Shell Creek in Schuyler, Neb.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, in partnership with the city of Schuyler and the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District, has begun construction of a 2.5-mile levee along Shell Creek north and east of Schuyler and is marking the occasion with a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, March 27th starting at 10:15 a.m. The formal ceremony will begin at the Oak Ballroom, 175 Higgins Drive in Schuyler. Afterwards attendees will be encouraged to gather at the dig site located near East 22nd Street and Old Highway 30 (now Road E) by the old drive-in movie theatre to break ground.

  • Gavins Point releases will divert to spillway beginning March 26

    Due to maintenance and repairs at the Gavins Point Dam power plant, water releases, which normally run through the powerhouse, will be diverted to the spillway beginning Wednesday, March 26. "We are releasing the same amount of water that we normally would. The difference is, it will be more visible to the public because we will be using the spillway instead of the powerhouse," said Dave Becker, Operations Project Manager for Gavins Point.

  • Draft feasibility report for stream bank restoration near Wisner, Neb. available for review

    A draft feasibility report and environmental assessment (EA) for stream bank restoration southwest of Wisner, Neb. is currently available for public review. The report identifies alternatives to provide stream bank protection and prohibit further rapid erosion on the right-descending bank of the Elkhorn River, Cuming County, Neb. Public infrastructure being protected includes the Cuming County Road 6 bridge and roadway.

  • Omaha District Readiness Branch providing assistance in Montana and Wyoming

    Warmer temperatures are leading to flooding in parts of Wyoming and Montana along the Bighorn River, Little Bighorn River, Pryor Creek and tributaries of the Yellowstone River. In response to requests from the Crow Nation for sandbags, the State of Montana for ice jam technical assistance on the Mussellshell River, and from the State of Wyoming for technical assistance regarding an ice jam and flooding in north-central Wyoming along the Bighorn River, the Omaha District Readiness Branch has activated its Emergency Operations Center to Level II, Emergency Watch Status and is communicating directly with the National Weather Service for updated river stage forecasts.

    A draft feasibility report and environmental assessment for stream bank restoration near Tilden, Neb. is currently available for public review. The report identifies alternatives to provide stream bank protection and prohibit further rapid erosion on the right-descending bank of the Elkhorn River, Madison County, Neb. Public infrastructure being protected includes the 536th Avenue county road bridge.

  • Public scoping meeting scheduled for proposed shallow water habitat projects at Brownville and Langdon Bends

    A public scoping meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Brownville Concert Hall, 126 Atlantic Street, Brownville, Neb. The purpose of the meeting is to seek public input on the development of two proposed shallow water habitat projects: Brownville Bend located a half mile south of Brownville, and Langdon Bend located two miles east of Nemaha, Neb. The meeting will be hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

  • Moffat Project Final EIS to be released

    April 25, 2014 set for the release of the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Denver Water’s Moffat Collection System Project. At this time the public will have an opportunity to review and comment on the Final EIS, which will in turn be considered prior to final decision-making by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.

  • Draft Environmental Impact Statement to be prepared for Cherry Creek Dam, Aurora, Colo.

    A draft Environmental Impact Statement will be prepared by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District to address environmental issues related to remediation alternatives that will be proposed at the conclusion of a Dam Safety Modification Study for the Cherry Creek Dam in Aurora, Colo. Public scoping meetings will be held in 2014 within the local Cherry Creek Dam project area to present information regarding the array of remediation alternatives that may be addressed in the draft EIS, receive public comments, and solicit input regarding dam safety issues, additional remediation alternatives to consider, and other environmental issues of concern to the public.
