Piping plover arrive in North Dakota

Some areas around Lake Sakakawea where Piping Plovers typically nest are inaccessible during this year's nesting season. Park rangers and biologists from several agencies have observed many of the birds at area boat ramps. As the mountain snowpack begins to melt and the runoff arrives at Lake Sakakawea, rising lake elevations reduce the available nesting habitat near the lake and lead to birds nesting in marina parking lots and boat ramp areas. Annual sediment flushing exercise scheduled at Cherry Creek Reservoir

The annual sediment flushing exercise will be completed at Cherry Creek Reservoir on Thursday, May 29, 2014. A release of 50 cubic feet per second (cfs) will be made at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 until the flush begins. The actual flushing exercise will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 12:20 p.m., Thursday, May 29, when the release will be set back to normal levels. The travel time from Cherry Creek dam to the Cherry Creek at Denver streamgage, located at the Champa Street Bridge, is about 6 hours. [Read More]

Jamestown Reservoir Releases to Increase

Jamestown Reservoir releases will be increased to 500 cfs on Wednesday, May 21. Pipestem Reservoir releases will remain unchanged at 5 cfs. The combined release will be 505 cfs. Stages are expected to increase by about 4 inches at the James River at Jamestown gage. [Read More]

Crest Road, the road that crosses the Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, S.D., will be closed from 8 a.m. Monday, May 19 through noon Friday, May 23. The public is asked to plan on an alternate route of travel during this time. [Read More]

Gavins Point spillway road closed May 5-9

The road crossing Gavins Point Dam, near Yankton, S.D., also known as Crest Road or the spillway road, will be closed from 8 a.m. Monday, May 5 through 5 p.m. Friday May 9 while crews conduct spillway maintenance. Powerhouse tours, camping and day use fees and dates for Lake Sakakawea announced

Dates and times for Garrison Dam and Lake Sakakawea are now available for the 2014 recreation season. Powerhouse tours at the Garrison Dam Power Plant will begin June 5 and continue through August 2. Tours will be conducted every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Campgrounds will begin opening May 1. Reservations can be made by calling 1-877-444-6777 or visiting Recreation.gov. Garrison Dam power plant releases to halt for 4 hours May 2

Releases from the Garrison Dam power plant in Riverdale, N.D. will be halted from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2. The pause will allow crews to install a boat dock downstream from the power plant under safer conditions. There are no plans to divert releases to the spillway during this time. The boat dock was removed for the winter and is being re-installed to support the recreation season. [Read More]
