Contract awarded for chute repairs at Middle Decatur Bend, Burt County, Neb. and backwater repairs at Hole-in-the-Rock, Thurston County, Neb.

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a contract to Newt Marine Service of Dubuque, Iowa for $972,142.25 for repairs to existing chute and backwater projects at Middle Decatur Bend near Decatur in Burt County, Neb. and Hole-in-the-Rock located on the Omaha Indian Reservation north of Macy in Thurston County, Neb. The proposed projects will repair damages to existing shallow water habitat features caused by the 2011 Missouri River Flood.

Vegetation control to begin on Missouri River sandbars between Pickstown, S.D. and Ponca, Neb.

During September, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will spray sandbars in the Missouri River between Pickstown, S.D. and Ponca, Neb. with aquatic-approved herbicides to keep the sandbars clear of vegetation. This work is being done so that the sandbars may be used by the endangered interior least tern and threatened piping plover for nesting.

Vegetation control to begin on Missouri River sandbars between Garrison Dam and Lake Oahe headwaters, N.D.

During September, the Omaha District will conduct vegetation management activities on sandbars in the Missouri River. Contractors will use a helicopter to spray sandbars with aquatic-approved herbicides to keep them clear of vegetation. This work is being done so that the sandbars can continue to be used by the endangered interior least tern and threatened piping plover for nesting. The sandbars being treated are on the Missouri River between the Garrison Dam and the Hazelton Boat Ramp on Lake Oahe (river miles 1381 to 1278). The Bismarck-Mandan river reach, river miles 1325 to 1310, and river miles 1364 and 1363 north of Washburn, N.D. will not be sprayed.

Draft environmental assessment for modifications to Missouri River structures available for review

A draft environmental assessment for the modification of 73 existing dike structures along the Missouri River is currently available for public review. The draft EA evaluates the environmental impacts of modifying the structures to create the physical conditions necessary to maximize the amount of shallow water habitat at each of the notched dikes.

Draft supplemental environmental assessment for repairs to Upper Hamburg chute available for public review

A draft supplemental environmental assessment for repairs to the Upper Hamburg chute in Otoe County, Neb. is currently available for public review. The draft supplemental EA evaluates the environmental impacts of repairing chute bank erosion that formed along two locations during the 2011 Missouri River flood. The purpose and scope of this supplemental EA are limited to evaluating the potential environmental effects of the proposed operation and maintenance chute repair actions.

The purpose and scope of this supplemental EA are limited to evaluating the potential environmental effects of the proposed operation and maintenance chute repair actions.

Public comment sought on shallow water habitat project at Middle Decatur Bend, Burt County, Neb.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host a public meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at the Decatur City Auditorium, 913 S. Broadway St., Decatur, Neb. from 6 to 8:00 p. m. to seek comment on a proposed shallow water habitat construction project at Middle Decatur Bend in Burt County, Neb.

The public comment period for the Yellowstone River diversion dam modification project at Intake, Mont. has been extended to May 16, 2014. Public scoping meeting scheduled for proposed shallow water habitat projects at Brownville and Langdon Bends

A public scoping meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Brownville Concert Hall, 126 Atlantic Street, Brownville, Neb. The purpose of the meeting is to seek public input on the development of two proposed shallow water habitat projects: Brownville Bend located a half mile south of Brownville, and Langdon Bend located two miles east of Nemaha, Neb. The meeting will be hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment for proposed modification at Kansas and Nishnabotna Bends in Neb. available for public review

A draft supplemental environmental assessment for a proposed modification at the Kansas and Nishnabotna Bends in Nemaha and Otoe counties, Neb. is currently available for public review. The purpose of the supplemental action is to provide protection to Levee Unit R-562 by diverting overland flows from Kansas Bend away from the toe of the levee unit while allowing for continued operation of the mitigation project.
