Acquisition Status:  Acquired from the Papio-Missouri Natural Resources District in 2009 under Water Resources Development Acts 1986 and 1999 authorizations.

On-Site Management:  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Site Access:  There is no public road access to the site and is only accessible by boat from the Missouri River.

Description, Use and Regulations

Description:  The Sandy Point Bend site is located along the right descending bank of the Missouri River. Construction was completed in 2013 and involved the creation of two parallel chutes (one 5,000 feet in length and the other 7,000 feet in length) with the riverward chute having three tie channels to the Missouri River and a single tie channel between the two chutes.

  • In addition, three rootless dikes were constructed along the riverbank to encourage top-width widening of the main river channel.
  • Construction of this complex was completed in 2013 and provided approximately 25 acres of chute habitat, with the potential for up to 63 acres as the chutes widen out naturally.  

Status:  Open to the public. Construction complete. Site/Habitat is in operations and maintenance status.

Site Use:  The site is open to the public for a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, bird watching, hiking and hunting (under special regulations).

Site-use Regulations:  

  • People visiting these areas must comply with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including hunting, fishing, etc.  In general Title 36 Part 327 of the Code of Federal Regulations governs the use of Corps property.  Other regulations may apply to properties owned by other federal agencies.
  • Special regulations and restrictions may be posted on site.

Special-use Regulations: 

  • Sandy Point Bend is located in Iowa on the Nebraska side of the river and is open to Nebraska hunting for small game; however, deer and turkey hunting require Iowa permits.
  • No target shooting, primitive camping or off-road vehicles permitted.
