Published June 16, 2014

OMAHA, Neb, – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled a public meeting to present information on the upcoming environmental investigation to be conducted at the former Offutt Air Force Base Atlas “D” Missile Site 3, a formerly used defense site located near Missouri Valley, Iowa. Formerly used defense sites were used by the military to train Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines as well as for National defense and to test new weapons and warfare capabilities.

The public meeting will be held at the Rand Community Center located at 100 South 4th Street, Missouri Valley, Iowa on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 from 6-9 p.m. At the meeting, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representatives will provide information on the upcoming investigation and answer any questions the public may have about this work.

The purpose of the investigation is to determine the presence and extent of contamination as a result of Cold War Missile Defense activities. During its active period, Missile Site 3 was used as an Atlas “D” Missile Site for potential launch of Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). Offutt AFB Atlas “D” Missile Site 3 was deactivated in 1964 and the land was used by the Iowa National Guard for training before the land was sold to the Iowa Western Community College.
