ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, awarded a construction contract Sept. 30, 2010 to American West Construction LLC of Denver, Colo., to perform dam safety maintenance work at Cherry Creek Dam in Arapahoe County, Colo.

Work on Cherry Creek Dam is scheduled to begin in December and expected to continue through May 2011.

All work will be performed on the downstream (north) side of the Cherry Creek Dam, south of Interstate 225. The scope of work will involve improving and cleaning 2000 feet of existing ditch, constructing 600 feet of new gravel-surfaced access road, installing two access manholes and a camera inspection of 14,000 feet of buried corrugated metal seepage collection pipe.

The Cherry Creek Reservoir is a 134,470 acre-foot reservoir with an 8-mile shoreline that was constructed for flood control purposes in 1950. The rolled earth-fill dam is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District.
