Oahe Downstream Recreation Area closed for annual hunt event

PIERRE, S.D. - Oahe Downstream Recreation Area near Pierre, S.D., will be closed Saturday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 24 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the annual Oahe Hunt. The Oahe Hunt is an annual event sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks for hunters whose mobility in by means of a wheelchair.

Entrance into the area is limited to one access road to ensure safety. Customers of the Oahe Marina Restaurant & Resort can access the area on the west side of the Oahe Dam. Staff will be stationed at this entrance off of South Dakota Highway 1806. The road entering the recreation area from the west will be barricaded at the Stilling Basin Bridge and detour signs will be in place to direct customers to a controlled entrance.

Access will be provided to the tailrace area by turning off SD Hwy 1804 and taking the road down the eastern face of dam. 

The Oahe Hunt takes place one weekend each year and is only for these disabled hunters. This event is the only time hunting is allowed within Oahe Downstream Recreation Area during the fall hunting seasons.
