OMAHA, Neb. -- The North Shore Campground at the Big Bend Project near Fort Thompson, South Dakota, will reopen to the public on May 15, 2025.
The campground had previously been identified for closure as part of temporary adjustments to recreation operations due to seasonal staffing constraints across multiple U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District projects.
The Big Bend Project will now be able to safely reopen and maintain the campground for public use this season due to the addition of new volunteer support.
“We’re grateful to our volunteers and local partners for helping us restore access to this popular recreation site,” said Jacki Bultsma, deputy operations project manager at Big Bend. “Their support ensures we can provide a safe and welcoming experience for our visitors.”
The Omaha District manages recreation areas at more than 25 sites along the Missouri River, serving millions of visitors each year. Public safety and stewardship remain top priorities as adjustments are made to maintain services across the region.
