Corps of Engineers to begin maintenance on Salt Creek Dams’ plunge pools

Published Dec. 14, 2020

LINCOLN, Neb.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District announced that it will begin maintenance on the downstream conduit outlet plunge pools Jan. 4, 2021 at the following Salt Creek Dam sites: 8, Wagon Train; 9, Stagecoach; 10, Yankee Hill; 12, Conestoga; and 13, Twin Lakes.

Construction will be on the downstream side of the dams and will involve removing existing rip rap, excavating around the outlet plunge pools, grading, and installing bedding and rip rap. At site 8, Wagon Train, a sand drain will be installed on the west side of the plunge pool. At site 4, Bluestem, some minor clearing and grubbing for rip rap and gravel stockpile placement will be performed near the plunge pools.

The following site reservoirs: 8, Wagon Train; 9, Stagecoach; 10, Yankee Hill; 12, Conestoga; and 13, Twin Lakes will be lowered as much as 1.5 feet to facilitate construction activities. Drawdowns will begin in December with work occurring from Jan. 4 through Feb. 17, 2021.

While the project is not considered to be an emergency repair, the work is necessary to repair erosion and sloughing at the plunge pools caused from high flows.
