YANKTON, S.D. – A timber stand improvement project will take place on 82 acres of the Lake Yankton Island below Gavins Point Dam beginning November 1 and is expected to be completed by November 30. Those dates may change due to weather and other factors.
During this improvement project, Eastern Red Cedar trees will be removed. These trees have overtaken the island, crowding out other native species. The removal is intended to restore the area to a more natural river habitat and to reduce the potential risk for wildfires.
Visitors should keep at least 100 yards away from any machinery or cutting activities. Hunters with tree stands are encouraged to not leave any tree stands within groves of cedar trees on the island during the falloff 2018. Temporary closures may be required for visitor safety. Visitors are reminded not to go beyond any posted closure signs.
