Kansas & Nishnabotna Bends, MRBSNP and FW Mitigation

Summary: Re-open two remnant side channels (chutes) at Kansas Bend and Nishnabotna Bend along the right bank of the Missouri River.

• A supplemental environmental assessment was approved in October 2012 to construct 7 earthen groins along the riverward toe of federal levee unit R-562 to reduce the potential for scour along the toe of the levee while maintaining the function of the Kansas Bend chute.
• A supplemental environmental assessment was approved in June 2011 to modify the Kansas Bend chute.Modification consisted of installing additional chute training structures to increase chute length and meander, slow water velocities, allow for accretion to 'shallow-up' the deep areas, and improve the quality of the shallow water habitat in the chute for the benefit of pallid sturgeon and other native fish and aquatic species.

Geographic Scope: Missouri River side channels at Kansas Bend and Nishnabotna Bend along the right bank of the Missouri River between river miles 541 and 547 in Otoe and Nemaha Counties, Nebraska.
