    Receiving the Building the Future GreenGov Award on Sept. 7 were employees from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District and the Directorate of Public Works at Fort Carson, Colorado, along with senior leadership from the Department of Defense, Army and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The award was presented for the work done at the 13th Combat Aviation Brigade Aviation Support Battalion Hangar, Fort Carson, Colorado, the first LEED Platinum and Net Zero hangar in the Army.

    Omaha District wins “Building the Future” Award

    The White House Council on Environmental Quality’s Office of Federal Sustainability hosted the 2016 GreenGov Presidential Awards, recognizing 12 agencies, individuals or facilities from across the U.S. Government. The award ceremony took place September 7th at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C. The “Building the Future” award went to Project Delivery Team for the 4th Infantry Division’s Aviation Support Battalion’s new Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Certified helicopter maintenance hangar located in Fort Carson, Colorado.

    This hangar, built for the 4th Infantry Division’s 4th Combat Aviation Brigade’s 404th Aviation Support Battalion, has been occupied since 2015, and was certified LEED Platinum in December. With the photo-voltaic array that complimented the construction, there was a 105 percent power-use reduction.

    With the surge of LEED-required construction, Fort Carson has one of the highest concentrations of LEED certified buildings in the country. The construction of LEED facilities is not a new concept at this installation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District has built and LEED certified 82 buildings.

    What is FEM, and Why is it Important?

    In order for the dams to work properly, they need regular maintenance. To keep them running, each of the Corps’ dams has a staff of electricians, mechanics and outdoor maintenance crews to do the physical work. One of the more common maintenance tasks is performing annual maintenance on the hydropower units, each of which generate electricity for thousands of homes. To track the maintenance, the Corps uses a program called Facilities and Equipment Maintenance (FEM).

    These barracks, located in Fort Carson, Colo., have been constructed in close proximity to Butts Army Airfield. The dorm-style buildings are comprised of 370,156 square feet, and are equipped with individual bathrooms and kitchenettes. The recreational areas situated behind the barracks buildings have facilities for sports, barbecuing, as well as indoor community recreation facilities.
