Location and Description: Title VIII of WRDA 2000 authorizes cabin sites located within four cabin areas on the Fort Peck Project to be conveyed to current lease holders. Fort Peck Cabin Area is located entirely in Valley County, 17 miles southeast of Glasgow and  five miles from the Fort Peck Office. Rock Creek Cabin Area is located in both Garfield and McCone Counties and is 18 miles south of the Fort Peck Office. Hell Creek Cabin Area is located in Garfield County and is 30 miles from Jordan, Montana on Highway 200. The Pines Cabin Area is located in Valley County and is 15 miles upstream from the Fort Peck Office.

Problem and Need: Of the 392 cabin lots available at the four cottage areas, there are 367 lots leased to individuals who have constructed cabins or cottages in accordance with 16 U.S.C. 460d. The remaining lots are identified as “replacement” lots for cabins lost due to erosion or otherwise deemed unsuitable for transfer. Significant portions of lands at Fort Peck were withdrawn from public domain for construction of the dam, lake, and Fort Peck Game Range (now the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge).

Issues and Other Information: At the conclusion of all administrative activities under the Act, the Corps will no longer have statutory authority to utilize reimbursed funds. Return of any excess funds to the U.S. Treasury will begin when all administrative activities are completed.
