District finishes 2019 flood damage repairs near Clear Creek

OMAHA, Neb. - Sixteen months after devastating floods wreaked havoc in the Midwest, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District Systems Restoration Team has made significant progress restoring levee breaches and repairing damaged embankments along the Missouri River and its tributaries. To date, the Corps has closed 28 of 32 breaches.

Papio Lakes, Corps hosts virtual meeting for new master plan; public comments sought

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, Natural Resources Management Section hosted a Papio Lakes Master Plan kick-off meeting in May with agency partners and stakeholders to help consolidate several separate, older plans into one document for the Papio Lakes recreation area; the plan is available for public comment through July 31.

Corps Section 14 project facilitates Scribner’s promising future

In the spring of 2010, a major flood from the Elkhorn River caused the left river bank just upstream from County Road F and the Elkhorn River Bridge near Scribner, Neb. to erode back 200 feet and decimated an entire tree line several hundred feet long. The Corps' Section 14 Emergency Streambank and Shoreline Protection project will consist of a series of five spur dikes at various locations along the eroded bank. A construction contract was awarded in August 2014 to Iowa-based Niewohner Construction, Inc. for approximately $289,000. Once notice to proceed is given, the project is expected to take no more than six months to complete.

Collaboration leads to flood risk solutions in Schuyler

The first half of the month of June brought heavy rainfall to northeastern Nebraska including the community of Schuyler. Heavy storms the weekend of June 20 caused lowland flooding along Shell Creek reminding residents of Schuyler of the importance of constructing a new levee. The Shell Creek Levee project experienced work delays during the week of June 23 because of the increased precipitation and runoff. Ceremonial shovels broke ground in Schuyler March 27 and despite rain and chilly temperatures, warmth from smiles radiated from the project team.

Discovering a steamboat relic of Missouri River trade

When you think of shipwrecks, it might be pirates, the ocean, sunken treasure and the stuff of movie–style wonder. But the Mighty Mo’ tells a tale with hundreds of shipwrecks of all sizes along its length. For the Corps, there are several responsibilities: regulatory permitting for construction in areas where a discovery may occur, the need to mitigate a construction project to address a discovery and the need to protect and respect the significance of a discovery among others.
