DENVER, Colo. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, awarded a $370,700 contract to Shannon and Wilson, Inc., Geotechnical and Environmental Consultants, of St. Louis, Mo., to install new dam safety instrumentation at Cherry Creek Dam in Arapahoe County, Colorado.
The contract includes the installation of 12 new piezometers (groundwater observation wells) on the downstream slope of Cherry Creek Dam and along the south side of the John F Kennedy Golf Course adjacent to Interstate 225.
“The new piezometers will allow us to collect subsurface data in support of ongoing dam safety studies,” said Fred Rios, Operations Project Manager at the Tri-Lakes Project Office. “They also will enhance our monitoring capabilities during normal operation of Cherry Creek Dam.”
Drilling activity and piezometer installation will begin in early May and will continue through the end of June. The Cherry Creek Dam Crest Road will close May 9 and is not scheduled to re-open until May 30 to accommodate the contract work.
The Cherry Creek Reservoir is a 134,470 acre-foot reservoir with an 8-mile shoreline that was constructed for flood control purposes in 1950. The rolled earth-fill dam is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District.
