Public comment period extended for Yellowstone River diversion dam modification project at Intake, Mont.

The public comment period for the Yellowstone River diversion dam modification project at Intake, Mont. has been extended to May 16, 2014. The draft document for the proposed project can be viewed at http://www.usbr.gov/gp/mtao/loweryellowstone/index.html and in hardcopy at libraries in Glendive and Sidney, Mont.

Gavins Point spillway road closed May 5-9

The road crossing Gavins Point Dam, near Yankton, S.D., also known as Crest Road or the spillway road, will be closed from 8 a.m. Monday, May 5 through 5 p.m. Friday May 9 while crews conduct spillway maintenance. The closure will include nighttime hours. The public is asked to plan on an alternate route of travel during this time.

Powerhouse tours, camping and day use fees and dates for Lake Sakakawea announced

Dates and times for Garrison Dam and Lake Sakakawea are now available for the 2014 recreation season. Powerhouse tours at the Garrison Dam Power Plant will begin June 5 and continue through August 2. Tours will be conducted every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Campgrounds will begin opening May 1. Reservations can be made by calling 1-877-444-6777 or visiting Recreation.gov.

Garrison Dam power plant releases to halt for 4 hours May 2

Releases from the Garrison Dam power plant in Riverdale, N.D. will be halted from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2. The pause will allow crews to install a boat dock downstream from the power plant under safer conditions. There are no plans to divert releases to the spillway during this time. The boat dock was removed for the winter and is being re-installed to support the recreation season.

Moffat Collection System Project Final EIS available for public review

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, is announcing the release of its Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Denver Water’s Moffat Collection System Project, a Colorado Front Range water supply proposal to enlarge the existing Gross Reservoir in Boulder County, using existing infrastructure to divert water from the Fraser River, Williams Fork River, Blue River and South Platte River to Denver’s existing water treatment system during average and wet years.

Oahe Project partners to offer special turkey hunt

Hunter Greg Brandner of Pierre, S.D., harvested the first turkey of a special spring turkey hunt being held at the Oahe Dam and Lake recreation area. The hunt was hosted in partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation and the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. In recent years, the Oahe Project has made use of its specially enclosed blinds, which allows hunters with disabilities requiring the use a wheelchair, the opportunity to hunt deer.

Flood repair work on Gavins Point Spillway near Yankton, S.D. will cause one lane of the spillway road to be closed into the fall.

Public comment sought on flood risk management and ecosystem restoration study near Greeley, Colo.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in cooperation with the city of Greeley, will hold a public meeting on Monday, Apr. 21 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Rodarte Center, 920 A Street in Greeley, Colo. to solicit comments on a draft feasibility study report and environmental assessment that identifies alternatives for flood risk management and ecosystem restoration within a 17-mile reach of the Cache la Poudre River, near Greeley. There will be a formal presentation at 6:30 p.m. followed by a question and answer session.

Release Plan Announced for Jamestown and Pipestem Reservoirs

Pipestem Reservoir is currently at pool elevation 1447.7 feet which results in 3.7 percent of the flood pool occupied. Inflows are currently 440 cfs with a reservoir release of 50 cfs. Jamestown Reservoir is currently at pool elevation 1431.7 feet which results in 0.8 percent of the flood pool occupied. Inflows are currently 570 cfs with a reservoir release of 100 cfs. The combined release is 150 cfs. Maximum combined releases from the reservoirs are currently expected to be near 450 cubic feet per second (cfs). Additional significant rainfall or snow may necessitate higher release levels.

Tyrannosaurus Rex to embark on cross country journey

The USACE Omaha District’s Wankel T.rex will soon travel from Montana, where it has resided for the past 66 million years, to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. The Museum of the Rockies, Bozeman, Mont., home to the T.rex since it was excavated in 1990, will host a free, public sendoff April 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History is planning a number of events, beginning April 15, to welcome the T. rex to the Nation’s Capital.
