Sioux Falls Levee Restoration Information

Background: The Sioux Falls – Big Sioux River and Skunk Creek Levee Systems were damaged during the 2019 Flood Event, leading to the Levee Sponsor submitting a Public Law (PL) 84-99 Rehabilitation Assistance request to the US Army Corps of Engineers – Omaha District.

Current Action:  Design funding has been received to begin engineering and design work on the levee repair project. The purpose of the rehabilitation project is to repair the levee system to the authorized level of flood risk management.

Next Steps:

  1. Complete the engineering and design process.
  2. Advertise and award the levee repair contract.
  3. Repair the levee system to its authorized level of flood risk management benefits.

Status Updates:

08 November 2019 - The team continues engineering and design work on repairing the Sioux Falls levee system and is anticipating awarding the construction contract in early calendar year 2020.

24 October 2019 - The team continues engineering and design work on repairing the Sioux Falls levee system and is anticipating awarding the construction contract in early calendar year 2020.

13 October 2019 - The team continues engineering and design work on repairing the Sioux Falls levee system.

27 September 2019 – Engineering and design funds have been received. The team is now developing a schedule for the levee repair design work.

13 September 2019 – The team is awaiting receipt of funding from USACE HQ to begin designing the Sioux Falls levee system repairs.

06 September 2019 – The team has requested and is awaiting Engineering & Design funds to begin designing the levee repairs.  An in-house design team is being identified within the Omaha District to complete this design effort.

29 August 2019 – Eligibility of levee repairs under PL 84-99 has been approved. The team is now awaiting Engineering & Design funds to begin designing the repairs.

23 August 2019 – The damage assessment and economic analysis report will be sent to the Northwest Division within the next week for the final determination on eligibility of repairs.

05 August 2019 – The team continues to finalize the damage assessment and economic analysis report to make a final determination on eligibility for PL 84-99 Rehabilitation Assistance.

01 August 2019 – An initial site damage assessment been completed.  The team is finalizing the damage assessment and economic analysis report to make a final determination on eligibility for PL 84-99 Rehabilitation Assistance.
