Nemaha and Atchison Counties - Flood Risk Management Feasibility Study

Location: Nemaha County, NE & Atchison County, MO, along the Missouri River.

Sponsors: Sponsored by Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) & Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (NeDNR) in partnership with Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD).

Current Phase: Feasibility Study

Description: Flooding along the Missouri River has long been a concern for residents of Atchison and Nemaha counties, with major flood events such as the 2011 flood event highlighting the need for improved flood risk management measures. The region continues to face risks from higher river levels during periods of heavy rainfall and snowmelt upstream, putting communities, property, infrastructure, and agriculture at risk.

In response to these challenges, USACE, in collaboration with Missouri & Nebraska DNRs, is conducting a feasibility study to assess and identify sustainable flood risk management solutions. The study will explore a range of potential measures, including levee modifications, floodplain management, and ecosystem restoration, aimed at reducing the flood risk currently experienced by local communities.

The USACE will continue working closely with MoDNR, NeDNR, other key agencies, and public stakeholders to explore feasible flood risk management measures. This feasibility study will last approximately 3 years and will end with a recommended plan

Agreement signing ceremony @ 3pm with open house to follow

The Missouri DNR (MoDNR) and Nebraska DNR (NeDNR) will be partnering with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in a feasibility study to assess flood risk management measures along the Missouri River in Nemaha County, Nebraska, and Atchison County, Missouri.

The event will take place on Wednesday, January 15th beginning at 3:00pm with a signing ceremony to formalize the partnership. Following the ceremony, will be an open house.
