Ice jam flooding on the Platte River in NE
Unseasonably warm temperatures has caused an ice jam South of the Hwy 92 bridge near Venice, Nebraska. The ice jam is approximately 1.5 miles long and is causing lowland flooding. Floodwaters are within 1.5 feet of the top of the Western Sarpy/Clear Creek Levee, just South of Venice, NE on the West side of the river. The levee is currently under construction and the USACE contractor is on site bolstering a portion of the upstream tie-back levee that was experiencing seepage with the high river levels. The State of Nebraska requested USACE technical assistance for the ice jam and flooding on the Platte River. The State of Nebraska, affected counties, Natural Resource Districts, and the National Weather Service are monitoring the river and communicating regularly.
