New relief wells to be installed at Cherry Creek

Published Aug. 30, 2012

LITTLETON, Colo. - The Drill Crew Unit of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, will be performing drilling work at Cherry Creek Dam in Arapahoe County, Colorado over the next four to five weeks. The Corps will install 12 to 14 new relief wells immediately downstream of the dam embankment adjacent to Interstate 225.

This work is a continuation of dam safety maintenance work that began in 2011 with the cleaning, inspection and repair of the relief well system collector pipe.

The new wells are designed to relieve seepage pressures under the dam that could develop during extreme high pool events and will replace existing wells that are more than 60 years old. Drilling activity will begin on or about Sept. 4, 2012 and will continue through the end of September 2012.
