L575 Levee Restoration Information - UPDATED 6/8/19
Background:
The L-575 Benton-Washington-McKissock-Buchanan-Atchison-Hamburg Levee System experienced significant damage during the 2019 Flood Event. This led to seven (7) breaches, along with substantial other damages, occurring throughout the Levee System.
Current Action:
Two priority breaches that are impacting the I-29 corridor have been identified for initial repairs. These two construction contracts were awarded on 14 and 19 Apr 2019. The OSRT is also working an overall plan for rehabilitating the levee system.
Next Steps:
Provide an interim level of flood risk reduction at both initial breach repair locations.
Conduct physical damage assessment when water levels recede and the levees are accessible
Design and construct levee rehabilitation to authorized level of flood risk management.

Aerial video shows ongoing construction of the Sacramento Weir Widening Project along the west bank of the Sacramento River in Yolo County, California, Nov. 16, 2023. The footage shows completed work on the north setback levee, installed site access ramps and office trailers, cement soil mixing and piles for the vehicle bridge pile caps, and the commencement of foundation work for the fish passage structure.
The project is an approximately $350 million collaborative effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, California’s Central Valley Flood Protection Board, California Department of Water Resources, and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency to widen the existing 1,950-foot weir an additional 1,500 feet.
The expanded weir and bypass will allow excessive floodwaters to flow over the river channels and into the bypasses during severe flood events, ultimately reducing flood risk for the more than 500,000 people in the greater Sacramento region. The work is part of the larger American River Common Features 2016 project that will modernize Sacramento’s aging flood infrastructure.
