USACE seeks public comment on South Dakota Highway 44 Bridge Replacement Project

USACE OMAHA DISTRICT
Published May 7, 2024

A proposed replacement of the South Dakota Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Highway 44 (SD44) Platte-Winner Bridge, located within Gregory and Charles Mix Counties, is currently available for public review and comment.

The bridge crosses over the Missouri River (Lake Francis Case reservoir) regulated by  the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Fort Randall Dam. The purpose of the proposed action is to replace the existing bridge that was ranked as a priority bridge replacement following the 2016 Major Bridge Investment Study conducted by S.D. DOT.

SD44 is the primary route linking the cities of Platte, S.D., and Winner, S.D. Regionally, SD44 stretches 379 miles from US 385 west of Rapid City, S.D., to I-29 near Sioux Falls, S.D. in southern South Dakota. Adding to the significance of this crossing is that any closure of the bridge would require an approximate 85-mile detour involving travel to the I-90 crossing of the river at Chamberlain, SD.

The proposed project is comprised of the following elements: Construction of a new bridge north of the existing bridge, that will tie into existing SD44 highway. Then demolition and removal of the existing bridge.

The public is encouraged to provide comments on the proposed alteration. The reference number for the project is 408-NWO-2023-0016. It is available for viewing at:
