High flows scheduled during annual maintenance at Cherry Creek Dam May 22: USACE urges public safety

Higher than normal flows of water through Cherry Creek Dam will begin this Wednesday, May 22, as part of annual sediment flushing by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District to help ensure proper operation of the dam’s outlet gates.

Cherry Creek Dam and flood safety event to boost community awareness

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, in collaboration with Denver-area flood risk management partners, will host a community event with displays, gadgets, gear, scientists, engineers and park rangers to share information and build awareness of the role of Cherry Creek Dam in reducing flooding in the Denver area. Specialists in emergency preparedness and on the history and health of the Cherry Creek watershed also will help visitors explore their role in reducing floods.

Public comment period extended for Cherry Creek Dam Water Control Plan changes

Water managers for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District have extended the public comment period to December 16 for a Draft Report outlining proposed modifications to the Water Control Plan for Cherry Creek Dam during extreme flood events. The proposed plan allows water managers to release more water from the dam to reduce the risk of overtopping and failure. Public comments on the report will now be accepted through December 16, 2016. Changes to the water control plan could still be implemented as early as January 2017.

Public meetings scheduled to discuss Cherry Creek Dam studies

Three public meetings to provide an update on the status of two studies taking place at Cherry Creek Dam are scheduled for the week of September 20. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host meetings to provide a status update on alternatives under consideration to address risks from extreme storm events associated with Cherry Creek Dam including a study to modify the dam’s water control plan.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, January 26, from 6-8 p.m. to gather input on modifying the Cherry Creek Dam Water Control Plan to release more water from the dam during extreme flooding events in order to reduce the risk of the dam overtopping and failing. Comments must be postmarked or received by February 26, 2016.

Cherry Creek Dam Crest Road to close for dam safety instrumentation and maintenance project

The Crest Road at Cherry Creek Dam will be closed from June 22 through July 12 to accommodate work that will be taking place adjacent to the crest road. The bike path at the downstream toe of the dam will remain open through construction. Crews will install two new groundwater observation wells, known as piezometers and remove 14 existing piezometers that are more than 60 years old from service and are no longer functional or needed. Crews will also be performing maintenance work on relief wells along the toe of the dam.

Cherry Creek Dam in Aurora, Colorado, is undergoing a Dam Safety Modification Study and an incorporated Environmental Impact Statement being conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District. Two public scoping meetings are scheduled and residents are invited to attend and participate: Thursday, January 22, 6-8 p.m.; Cherry Creek High School lecture center; 9300 East Union Avenue, Greenwood Village, CO Saturday January 24, 10 am – Noon; Campus Middle School cafeteria; 4785 S. Dayton Street, Englewood, CO The presentation and some handouts will also be available in Spanish.

Maintenance project to begin at Cherry Creek Dam near Denver

Work will begin in late December to install a 2,200-foot-long underground outfall pipe system for 14 relief wells that were installed along the downstream toe of the dam in 2012. The new relief well system is designed to relieve seepage pressure under the dam that could develop during extremely high reservoir elevation levels. The system replaces an existing well system that is more than 65 years old.

A draft Environmental Impact Statement will be prepared by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District to address environmental issues related to remediation alternatives that will be proposed at the conclusion of a Dam Safety Modification Study for the Cherry Creek Dam in Aurora, Colo. Public scoping meetings will be held in 2014 within the local Cherry Creek Dam project area to present information regarding the array of remediation alternatives that may be addressed in the draft EIS, receive public comments, and solicit input regarding dam safety issues, additional remediation alternatives to consider, and other environmental issues of concern to the public.

New relief wells to be installed at Cherry Creek

The Drill Crew Unit of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, will be performing drilling work at Cherry Creek Dam in Arapahoe County, Colorado over the next four to five weeks. The Corps will install 12 to 14 new relief wells immediately downstream of the dam embankment adjacent to Interstate 225.

Work on Cherry Creek Dam is scheduled to begin in December and expected to continue through May 2011.
