Garrison Dam & Lake Sakakawea

Construction of Garrison Dam/Lake Sakakawea began in 1947 and was completed in 1954 at a cost of about 300 million dollars.Garrison Dam is the fifth largest earthen dam in the United States.

The Dam

  • Type – Rolled Earth Fill
  • Height of Dam – 210 feet
  • Length of Dam – 2.5 miles
  • Width at Base - .5 miles
  • Width at Top – 60 feet
  • Fill Quantity – 66,500,000 cubic yards

The Powerhouse consists of 5 generating units with a total capacity of 583.3 megawatts.These generators produce 1.8 to 2.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year.Electrical power is transmitted from the project through seven transmission lines to various substations and is marketed byWestern Area Power Administration at the Watertown Dispatch Office in South Dakota.

Walk-In Powerplant Tours:

Walk-in tours Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 1:00p.m. and 3:00p.m.  ID required for those older than 18 years of age.

Scheduled Powerplant Tours (Off-Season):

Schools, Scouts, Energy, and other large groups may schedule a tour year-around by calling 701-654-7411
