What is the GIS Service Center?

The GIS Service Center is here to provide support for users of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within the Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District. In addition to providing technical expertise for GIS, we are also dedicated to expanding the use of GIS within the District. At present, the District has large amounts of spatial data in digital format and it is increasing everyday, yet GIS is often not utilized to help with the creation, organization and analysis of spatial data. An important role of the GIS Service Center is to look toward the future and predict the needs and wants of the GIS community within the Omaha District. Such vision has led to the development of ODIE, a user friendly ArcView interface that allows everyone access to spatial data, and also the transfer of the District spatial database to a RAID storage system for safer storage and faster data access.

Data Collection

  • The GIS Service Center personnel obtain and organize all types of spatial data for the Omaha District.
  • All District data is then georeferenced and projected in Albers.
  • To efficiently access data, our Library Creation Department organizes the District data by counties, river reaches, civil lakes, specific civil projects, 1:24,000 quadrangles, and 1:100,000 quadrangles.
Application Development
  • Using Avenue and AML, customized applications can be developed in ArcView and ARC/INFO.
  • The GIS Service Center develops applications that are used District wide, such as AV-ODIE and AV-RAMS.
  • We also develop applications for specific problems, such as Flood Delineation Modeling (FLDEM).
System Administration
  • The GIS Service Center is responsible for the system administration of over 30 Sun workstations throughout the Omaha District.
  • Duties include maintenance of user accounts, software installation, and troubleshooting.
  • The administrators deal with storage, back-up, and access issues for over approximately 1 TB of spatial data.
  • We maintain GIS related software on over 60 PCs.
  • We also make recommendations for system and network upgrades for the GIS community.
Personnel
  • Our experienced GIS and system administration personnel have a wide range of technical expertise ranging from various programming languages to software applications, including ArcView, ARC/INFO, and ERDAS Imagine.
  • In addition to a strong technical component, our diverse backgrounds in archeology, geology, hydrogeology, soils, remote sensing, and environmental applications allow us to help GIS users solve a wide range of problems.
