Nebraska Department of Transportation - The NDOT is proposing to improve 6.46 miles of N-96 near the City of Burwell, Nebraska. The work on highway N-96 would require completion of two segments to two different design standards. One segment would be built to 3R (Resurfacing, Restoration, and Rehabilitation) standards and the other segment would be built to DR-5 (New and Reconstruction) standards. The 3R portion of this project consists of the entire roadway within the described project areas, except for two segments associated with the Calamus River and North Loup River, where off-alignment construction would occur. The 3R portion of this project would upgrade the existing roadway on this segment of N-96 with two 11-foot wide asphalt lanes and 3-foot wide earth shoulders. The improvements on this project are comprised of pavement widening, asphalt repairs, milling and resurfacing resulting in a 28-foot surfaced top, reconstruction of existing surfaced drives and intersections, replacement of existing culverts, and construction of new culverts. The DR-5 portions of this project would construct two new bridges on N-96 to replace the bridges currently crossing the Calamus River and the North Loup River. Highway approaches to these structures would be built to DR-5 standards. Additional improvements would include grading work, construction of new horizontal and vertical alignments, reconstructing the adjacent roadway and shoulders, removal of the existing bridges, installation of new guardrail, surfacing under guardrail and earth shoulder construction, all of which would be determined by Roadway Design.
