The City of Custer requests Department of the Army authorization to reconstruct Custer West Dam. The work will include deepening and reshaping the pond to improve recreational access, fish culture and improved wildfire fighting water access. Public access, parking, fishing piers, a playground area and a widened golf course fairway are all recreational improvements in the proposed project. The impacts to waters of the U.S. associated with the proposed project include 1.12 acres for dam reconstruction, 0.29 acres net open water fill area for pond shaping, and the net pond volume increase due to deepening is 37.6 acre-feet. The proposed park recreational improvements result in up to 0.77 acres of wetland fill. The proposed activity is located in Section 23, Township 3 North, Range 5 East, Custer County, South Dakota. The basic purpose of the project is to provide recreational opportunities and water supply for fire protection. The overall purpose of the project is to provide aquatic related recreation and water supply to fight wildfire near the city of Custer.
