  • Public Meeting Scheduled for Wilson Island and Desoto Bend Shallow Water Habitat Projects

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Iowa Department of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, Mar. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Desoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, 1434 316th Lane, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. The purpose of the meeting is to seek public input on the development of two proposed shallow water habitat projects. One project is located at Wilson Island State Recreation Area and the other at Desoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Spillway flow test for repair and rehabilitation to be conducted at Gavins Point Dam

    As part of the ongoing rehabilitation and repair of the damage from the Missouri River Flood of 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, will temporarily increase discharges out of Gavins Point Dam Tuesday, March 12 to conduct a spillway flow test.
  • Shell Creek Levee Project at Schuyler, Nebraska

    The city of Schuyler, the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District, and the Corps of Engineers are partnering on a project to reduce flood risks within Schuyler, Neb. A feasibility study (completed in September 2011) identified an economically feasible project consisting of two levee systems, one for the Shell Creek and one for the Platte River.
  • Corps seeks public comment on Draft Environmental Assessment, Restoration of Emergent Sandbar Habitat Complexes in the Missouri River, Nebraska and South Dakota

    A draft environmental assessment (EA) for the restoration of emergent sandbar habitat complexes in the Missouri River (Nebraska and South Dakota) is currently available for public review. The draft EA evaluates the environmental impacts of removing and preventing vegetation on emergent sandbar habitat located within the Fort Randall, Lewis and Clark Lake and Gavins Point reaches of the Missouri River between river mile 878.3 and 752.7.
  • Moffat Project Final EIS to move toward completion

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, has announced a tentative date for the release of its Final Environmental Impact Statement for Denver Water’s Moffat Collection System Project. With federal and state agency and the applicant, Denver Water’s concurrence, the Corps anticipates that the projected Final EIS will be released in February 2014.
  • Public Meeting Scheduled for Little Sioux Bend Shallow Water Habitat Project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Iowa Department of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting on Thursday, Mar. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Desoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, 1434 316th Lane, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. The purpose of the meeting is to seek public input on potential restoration and mitigation actions for the shallow water habitat project at Little Sioux Bend.
  • Landowners reminded to obtain permit for activity affecting Missouri River

    Landowners adjacent to the Missouri River, including Lake Sakakawea and Lake Oahe, are reminded that obtaining a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is required for any activity in or affecting the Missouri River system. Types of activities that require permits include, but are not limited to: boat docks, intake systems, bank stabilization, dredging and maintenance to any existing structure or permitted activity.

    Omaha District Emergency Management Office held its annual Flood Fight training on February 15 for non-federal levee sponsors in the PL 84-99 program, and State and County Emergency Managers near Omaha, Neb.
  • Corps approves first surplus water supply agreement for Lake Sakakawea

    The first Surplus Water Agreement, authorized by Section 6 of the 1944 Flood Control Act, allowing the temporary withdrawal of water from Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota, was signed by the Omaha District Commander Col. Joel R. Cross late yesterday evening.
  • Corps enters partnership with Collingsworth Foundation to promote water safety

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District has formally partnered with the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation to promote water safety within the Omaha District including Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, Colorado and Nebraska.
