PICKSTOWN, SD - The Karl Mundt National Wildlife Refuge, located near the Fort Randall Dam, will play host to the 6th Annual South Dakota Birding Festival from May 20-22.
The event schedule and registration are available online from South Dakota Missouri River Tourism.
Participants will meet with birding experts and hear from guest speakers. Activities include: bird identification, bird banding, guided field trips, and children's activities.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, waterproof/resistant boots or shoes and dress in layers, as the weather can vary from cold (mornings) to much warmer (midday).
During a previous festival, birders spotted a Western Grebe paired with a Clark's Grebe.
Other "frequent fliers" have included Bald Eagles, Green Heron, Hooded Merganser, Stilt Sandpiper, Whip-poor-will, Eastern Screech Owl, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Great-Crested Flycatcher, Bell's Vireo, Palm Warbler, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, and Bobolink.
