PIERRE, S.D. - Hunter Greg Brandner of Pierre, S.D., harvested the first turkey of a special spring turkey hunt being held at the Oahe Dam and Lake recreation area.

Brandner harvested his turkey at about 9:30 a.m. Friday. "He came running toward the blind when he heard the call," said Brandner. "My adrenalin was flowing, he came within 20 yards of the blind."

The hunt was hosted in partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation and the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. In recent years, the Oahe Project has made use of its specially enclosed blinds, which allows hunters with disabilities requiring the use a wheelchair, the opportunity to hunt deer.

The group worked together this year to host five hunters. The team had five available tags, including four resident and one non-resident tag, for a spring hunt open to hunters with disabilities wanting to harvest a male turkey.

There area is closed to all hunting, except for the deer hunt and turkey hunt, which is open to hunters with disabilities requiring the use of a wheelchair.

Brandner thanked Jeff Gutenkauf and Jordan Kitts for assisting with his hunt.

The season opened April 12 and will close April 30 for this specialty area.
