Release Plan Announced for Jamestown and Pipestem Reservoirs

Published April 10, 2014

OMAHA, Neb. —Jamestown and Pipestem Reservoirs have been experiencing snowmelt inflows this week.

Pipestem Reservoir is currently at pool elevation 1447.7 feet which results in 3.7 percent of the flood pool occupied. Inflows are currently 440 cfs with a reservoir release of 50 cfs. Jamestown Reservoir is currently at pool elevation 1431.7 feet which results in 0.8 percent of the flood pool occupied. Inflows are currently 570 cfs with a reservoir release of 100 cfs. The combined release is 150 cfs. Maximum combined releases from the reservoirs are currently expected to be near 450 cubic feet per second (cfs). Additional significant rainfall or snow may necessitate higher release levels.

Small releases were initiated from Pipestem Dam with the initial snowmelt on March 12. The release has been as high as 135 cfs but was reduced to 50 cfs on April 4 and is planned to remain near this level during the remainder of the snowmelt. Jamestown Reservoir releases were initiated on April 8 with a 100 cfs release, and is planned to be increased to 200 cfs on Friday as downstream river levels begin to drop. It is expected that the release from Jamestown Dam will be increased as high as 400 cfs this spring. During the spring and summer, emphasis will be placed on evacuating Jamestown Reservoir flood storage by the June 1 target date. Pipestem Reservoir flood storage will be primarily evacuated in June, July and August.
